Practice 3
Appreciating as a Bridge to Action
Principle of Connected Identity
Gratitude is a powerful motivator for meaningful action. This practice helps you reflect on what you have received and identify ways to give back—to your community, your work, or the Earth—in a way that adds value and creates lasting impact.
The evidence
Studies on gratitude show that practicing it can increase well-being, enhance relationships, and boost motivation.
Why it matters
With 70% of employees reporting a lack of appreciation in their workplaces (Workplace Insight, 2022), this practice not only fosters personal fulfillment but also encourages leaders to create a culture of reciprocity and purpose.
Instructions
Begin With Reflection
Take a moment to reflect on something or someone you are grateful for in your life or work.
Write a Gratitude Statement
Write a short note or statement expressing thanks. Be specific about the impact this has had on you.
Commit to Giving Forward
Reflect on how you can give back to this person, community, or the Earth. Ask: What can I add that brings value or honors what I have received?
Take Action
Create a small, tangible action step—such as writing a letter, planting a tree, or mentoring someone—and set a timeline to complete it.
